The downside? Fresh flowers are delicate. They are affected by heat, travel, timing and handling. In an Australian summer, even the most beautiful fresh arrangement can start to wilt faster than expected, especially if it is sitting outdoors in full sun before the ceremony begins. Australia’s hot summers are brutal to fresh blooms (so brutal that some of my hero floral designers refuse to work in December to February, because the flowers and the florists themselves, just cannot look pretty in the heat. We don’t provide fresh florals in the warmer months, as the quality cannot be guaranteed, and quality is important to us.
They can also be unpredictable. If a particular bloom is out of season, damaged in transit, unavailable from suppliers or affected by weather, your florist may need to substitute. A good florist will always make it beautiful, but if you have your heart set on a very specific flower, fresh florals definitely come with a little less certainty.
Faux Florals: Flexible, Fabulous and Seriously Underrated
Forget everything you think you know about fake flowers.
We are not talking about dusty craft-store bunches from 1998 or the ones in Grandma’s house. High-end faux florals have completely changed the wedding game. The best ones look real, feel real, photograph beautifully and give couples far more flexibility than fresh flowers ever could.

Cheap artificial flowers are cheap for a reason. If you want realistic, premium faux wedding flowers, they are an investment. Silk, real-touch, wax-coated and high-end artificial blooms cost more than basic craft-store flowers because they are designed to look convincing in person and on camera.
The good news? You do not always need to buy them.
Hiring faux florals can be one of the best budget decisions you make. You get the luxury look without having to store dozens of arrangements in your spare room, clean them later, or list them on Facebook Marketplace nine months after the wedding.
Premium faux flowers also reduce waste. Instead of beautiful fresh blooms being thrown into the green waste bin the next morning, your arrangements can be reused, restyled and loved again by another couple.
Can You Mix Fresh and Faux?
Absolutely — and when it is done well, the result can be stunning. Some couples choose fresh personal flowers, such as bouquets and buttonholes, and faux ceremony or reception installations. You can still achieve the overall look without blowing the budget on imported stems.
The trick is to work with someone who understands texture, scale and floral styling. Faux florals need to be arranged with the same care as fresh flowers. They should have movement, depth, shape and a natural flow — not look like they have been stuck into foam in perfect little rows.

When choosing between fresh and faux, think about the feeling you want your day to have.
If you are happy with seasonal flowers and you don’t need exact flower varieties or exact colours, fresh flowers may be perfect for you.
